Paws for the Cause – RedRover Relief

Oct 1, 2015 | Paws for the Cause, Resources |
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and an ideal time to feature RedRover’s specialized programs that support families with animals seeking safety from domestic violence.  Every year, millions of women and men in the U.S. experience physical violence by an intimate partner, and countless studies confirm that in these households pets may face special risks.  In fact, one study indicated that more than 70% of families with animals who entered domestic violence shelters reported that animals were injured, threatened, or killed.  Always focused on “bringing animals from crisis to care,” RedRover has developed tools and resources dedicated to responding to the dangerous realities at the intersection of domestic violence and companion animal care.

RedRover’s resources for individuals include Domestic Violence Safe Escape grants, which can be used to offset the cost of temporary boarding or veterinary care needs of an individual fleeing a violent situation (for safety, applications must be submitted by a shelter worker).  Additionally, a RedRover collaboration provides a comprehensive online resource, Safe Place for Pets, so individuals can find local resources for help, where they need it.  One of RedRover’s partners in the effort, Sheltering Animals and Families – Together (SAF-T), also provides a helpful, easy to share resource about safety planning with pets.

To address the systemic need for change, RedRover also provides resources for organizations.  Because the inability to bring animals to domestic violence shelter often creates a barrier to leaving, RedRover Safe Housing grants provide one time start up funds to make on-site animal housing at domestic violence shelters a reality (guidance for effective on site program implementation is offered by one of RedRover partner’s, SAF-T).

It’s well documented that many people with animals delay leaving dangerous situations because they fear the consequences for companion animals.  RedRover is a leader in responding to the critical intersection of animal and human welfare, whether you are in crisis and need support, working in the movement to end violence, or simply an individual interested in sharing resources and raising awareness. Explore RedRover’s extensive domestic violence resources to learn more and share these powerful tools: current statistics and inspirational personal success stories, resources , and other online training tools.  RedRover is truly an vital innovator in helping individuals, organizations, and others interested in learning more about what can be done to address this critical need.
