No Hot Dogs This Summer

Jul 23, 2015 | Companion Animal Care |

How cool is your dog?

During summer and other warm seasons, it’s important to remember that cars heat up fast, even in the shade or with the windows down.  Dogs are cool companions, but keeping pup pals safe is a human job.

Sixteen states in the U.S. have explicit laws to protect dogs in unattended vehicles.  Some of these laws include explanations of conditions that may be considered life-endangering.  Other local ordinances may be applicable, as well as more general anti-cruelty laws.

If you see a dog in a parked vehicle this summer:

  • notify law enforcement (911) – depending on local ordinances, officials may have the authority to open the vehicle in case of an emergency
  • stay with the car until officials arrive
  • notify nearby business owners, and request they announce the situation to customers
  • encourage business owners about posting a reminder sign like this

Don't Leave Dogs in Hot Cars

Share the ASPCA infographic  to help raise awareness about the risks of high temperatures in unattended vehicles.

Tooth_TravelIf you are planning to travel with your companion animals this summer, make arrangements in advance to avoid dangerous situations.  Find dog-friendly dining options with outdoor seating to accommodate your furry friend and explore nearby day-boarding options.  Many pet-friendly hotels may also be able to suggest local options for day-boarding or other dog-friendly activities.  Planning ahead may help you and your dog avoid a life-threatening situation.

Hot dogs are not happy dogs!
