Make Some Noise

Jan 28, 2015 | Companion Animal Care |

Get your cat to purr, and be a hero.  A really relaxed hero.  Studies show numerous health benefits for humans of a purring feline friend.   The emotional benefits of companion animals are well established and some research  demonstrates there are physical health benefits of cat purring as well.

While more studies are surely in the works, purrs clearly fit into the beneficial white noise spectrum.  As explained in the article, “The Science of ZZZZZZZs,” white noise can be helpful for sleep. Though there are plenty of products available offering improved sleep, breathing, and meditation background noise, no special equipment is necessarily required.  Since purr vibrations range from 20-140 Hz, and that frequency range can lower stress and blood pressure, as well as positively impacting other conditions, the benefits of white noise are readily available to folks with cats.

Purring is beneficial enough to have found its way into white noise replicators!  You can even find an online purr replicator!

If your cat hasn’t been humming like a muscle car, here are three quick ideas to keep that purr rumbling:

  • more play: rotate toy selection to keep playtime fresh.  Cats get bored easily.
  •  learn: understanding cat body language will help your feline bonding capacity
  • aim high: make sure your cat has access to height to satisfy those climbing instincts.
