Laws for Claws – from The Paw Project

Mar 3, 2016 | Animal Advocacy, Companion Animal Care, Paws for the Cause |

A proposed law in New York would prohibit declawing cats or other animals and effectively ban the majority of declawing, except in instances of special medical need.  Currently in Committee, if passed, Assembly Bill A1297 would become the first U.S. statewide ban of declawing, following several cities in California.

Introduced by Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, Senator Joseph Griffo introduced the companion bill (S.5084) in the Senate. Collaborating organizations involved include The Paw Project, Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), and others.  An Official Declawing Myth / Fact Sheet has been presented to New York state legislators.   The issue has garnered public support of Geezer Butler, founder and bassist of the band Black Sabbath.  An self-avowed cat person and avid Humane Society of the United States supporter, the rocker added his voice to the campaign, calling declawing “dreadfully inhumane.”

The elective surgery leaves cats defenseless, and though termed “declawing,” actually removes a portion of a cat’s bone.  The results of the surgery can be damaging and painful, and animal advocates point to numerous alternatives to declawing. In addition to nail clipping and providing ample scratching alternatives, specialized products are available like Soft Paw nail caps.  The Paw Project movie brings focus to the issue, and is available online ( iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Google Play, or YouTube) or on DVD.  This powerful film offers an important tool for companion animal advocates engaged in promoting indoor cat care.

Get informed and get involved!  Public support is essential to this groundbreaking effort.   Sign the petition and find letter writing tips on the issue, and consider joining the Paw Project mailing list for more information.  Take action today!
