The Right to Be Cool

Jul 28, 2016 | Animal Advocacy, Companion Animal Care |

If your canine companions find hot weather grueling, they are not alone. Don’t underestimate the importance of hydration and staying cool for our furry friends.  their lives depend on it. Here are some cool tricks and tips to keep your hound COOL this summer!

Six Tips

  • Cool It: Cooling pads can help alleviate heat build up during naps
  • Hydration: Don’t forget to bring water dishes for walks and outings
  • Swim Time: Visit a dog-friendly beach for some summer fun!
  • Cool Gear: Consider a cooling bandana or cooling vest
  • Shady Tip: make sure outdoor areas have plenty of shade, and avoid exercise during the hottest part of the day
  • No Hot Dogs: Never leave your friend in an unattended car on a hot day! Even with cooling methods and access to water, cars become dangerously hot very quickly.

Remember, your canine pal wears a fur coat!  Cooling methods only do so much, and heatstroke and dehydration can be lethal.  Pay attention to any warning signs of dehydration (skin lacks elasticity, lethargy) and heatstroke (panting, salivating, staggering).  Your dog’s life depends on it, so keep your forever friend safe and cool all summer long.
